Wordpress Sites
for Nonprofits

We design and build WordPress websites for nonprofits that need flexibility, clarity, and long-term usability. Our work helps organizations manage complex content more confidently, create better experiences for their audiences, and maintain a site that can evolve over time.

Organizations
we work with

We work with nonprofits that need more from their website than a simple marketing presence. These are often organizations with multiple audiences, evolving content, active programs, and internal teams who need a site that is both thoughtfully designed and practical to manage. These clients include:

  • Conservation and environmental nonprofits
  • Arts and cultural organizations
  • Education and research institutions
  • Community-based organizations
  • Membership organizations
  • Public-facing nonprofits with complex content

Common challenges
we help solve

Nature nonprofits often have richer, more varied content than their websites are built to support. Over time, that can make the site harder to navigate, harder to maintain, and less effective as a tool for communication and growth.

  • Complex Content Structures

  • Content Sprawl

  • Outdated / Inconsistent Design

  • Hard-to-manage content system

  • Multiple Audiences

  • Strong Work, Weak Storytelling

  • Site no longer reflects mission

  • Drift from brand guidelines

  • Disconnected third-party platforms

Our
Approach

We approach these projects as more than a visual refresh. A strong WordPress website for a nonprofit needs to support clear communication on the front end and confident content management on the back end.

  • 1. Understand Your Organization

We start by learning how your organization works, who the site needs to serve, and where the current experience is helping or getting in the way. That includes your mission, audiences, content, workflows, and long-term goals.

  • 2. Shape a Clearer Site Structure

We develop sitemaps, wireframes, content outlines, and related planning tools that help bring structure and cohesion to the site. This process helps clarify how content should be grouped, ordered, and connected, creating a more intuitive experience for users and a stronger foundation for design and development.

  • 3. Design a More Effective Experience

We create visual and user experience systems that reflect the character of the organization while making the site easier to use. The goal is a website that feels more coherent, more engaging, and more aligned with the quality of your work.

  • 4. Support Content and Launch Readiness

We help carry the project through the content phase by migrating existing material, supporting writing and editing, sourcing imagery, and preparing the site for launch. We also provide thorough training so your team feels confident managing the site once it is live.

  • 5. Build for Real-World Use

We build WordPress websites that are flexible, maintainable, and easier for internal teams to update over time. That often means creating clearer editing patterns, more consistent page-building systems, and a stronger foundation for long-term usability.

Testimonials

The Tanager team is deeply invested in their clients, which comes through in every step of the design process. They are skilled designers with a beautiful aesthetic. Their true skill, however, is in listening and visioning for and with their clients. They work alongside the client: getting to know the organization so that they fully understand limitations and aspirations, and they transform those conversations into an impressive, highly functional end product. Beyond the quality of their design work, the team at Tanager is a joy to collaborate with. We are delighted with the way that Tanager helped us transform our website and we would highly recommend them. – Kaity Ryan, Executive Director, Norman Bird Sanctuary
As designers, the team at Tanager are artists. As technicians, well, they’re artists. Their design work instantly captures your attention, as it must. The tech behind the design works flawlessly, as it must to allow the design to draw visitors deeper and deeper into the content of the site. — Arthur Pearson, CEO, Roger Tory Peterson Institute

FAQ

Why Wordpress for nonprofits?

+
WordPress offers a strong balance of flexibility, editorial control, and long-term adaptability. For many nonprofits, it provides the right foundation for a custom site that can grow and evolve over time.

Do you build custom WordPress sites?

+
Yes. Most of our projects are custom WordPress websites designed around the organization’s content, audiences, and long-term needs.

Can you help with information architecture and content strategy?

+
Yes. Many of our projects involve clarifying site structure, improving navigation, and helping organizations think through how content should be organized.

Can you help migrate content from an existing site?

+
Yes. We provide bulk, automated migrations of large volumes of content, as well as white-glove manual migration of more customized content. We can help plan for migration and structure content in a way that is cleaner, more consistent, and easier to manage in the new site.

Do you provide copywriting services?

+
Yes. We often write primary messaging copy, and supporting text such as excerpts and page introductions.

Do you source / provide images and videos?

+
Yes. We often source stock imagery that fits your brand and help you organize and improve media content you already own.

Can you support integrations with third-party platforms?

+
Yes. We often work with organizations whose websites need to connect with outside tools and platforms, and we can help determine the best way to handle those connections. Some platforms we commonly work with include Mailchimp, Constant Contact, Raiser's Edge (and other Blackbaud Products), Donor Perfect, Little Green Light, and Salesforce.

Do you provide SEO / AI Search Services?

+
We work with partners for these services during the project, and they often go onto work with our clients long-term.

Do you support sites after launch?

+
Yes. On almost every web project we complete, we continue to support, maintain, and improve the site after launch as your organization’s needs evolve. We have many 7+ year management agreements with sites that are still running well despite their age.

What WordPress themes do you use?

+
We build custom themes so we can have full control over functionality and design. We feel this is much more effective and robust than using an off-the-shelf-theme. We have in-house code libraries that make building custom themes faster than using an off-the-shelf theme.
